Reading slowly, on purpose

I read one book all summer. It was the best reading year I have had in a decade.

In June I decided to read only one book until September. Not a long book, either. Just one, slowly, with a pencil.

The first week was hard. My hands kept reaching for the next thing. By the third week something changed: I started noticing the sentences instead of racing through them to find out what happens.

We do not remember books. We remember the person we were while reading them.

I will go back to reading more than one book at a time. But I will keep one slow book on the go, always, as a kind of anchor.
